In keeping with today's theme, I wanted to get this clip up from Friday night after the debate.  VoteVets Chairman Jon Soltz discussed McCain's comments about supporting veterans with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.

Feel free to use this as an open thread.

US 'deploys' radar system in Israel (0.00 / 0)

The US has deployed an anti-missile radar in Israel that is mainly to warn of incoming Iranian ballistic missiles, Israeli state radio reports.

The radar with a range of more than 2,000km is sited in the south of the country, the radio station said on Sunday.

It is operated by a permanent 120-strong US army staff.

The Associated Press news agency quoted officials as saying that the new radar was flown into Israel last week along with some 120 American crew members and has been set up at the Nevatim air base in the Negev desert.

Ahmadinejad who faces an election in June was on Larry King Live last week. He softened his talk about wiping Israel off the map. He addressed the humanitarian crises in the Gaza. He also semi recognized the Holocaust stating that if it was as bad as the Jews claimed it was an "European Crime" and that the Palestinians should not be made to pay for it. Maybe the Jews should have been given land in AK. More in this transcript and I am just reporting, not endorsing.

Since this is an "open thread", I would like to urge ... (0.00 / 0)
those with 'BO ... that's HBO ... to watch "Taxi to The Dark Side" tonight.

I'm hoping some day that there will be some accountability for the torture, maiming and murder that we've perpetrated and also allowed in our names.

As much as we'd like, we cannot lay all the blame on monsters like Cheney; there were thousands upon thousands standing between him and those we have tortured, maimed and murdered.  I understand a percentage of those people were predisposed to taking advantage of a "no rules" environment and others who would blindly follow orders, but there were many, many more who knew perfectly well what we were and have been doing is illegal and didn't refuse.  It's not enough for some to feel bad about it after the fact.

I know it's a subject few are interested in facing; many prefer to label reports as pure fiction, despite evidence to the contrary.

I say you cannot honestly declare that you give a damn about what this country is supposed to stand for and ignore what has gone on.

" Afghanistan has seen 'spiral downwards': top US general" (0.00 / 0)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20...
LONDON (AFP) - Parts of Afghanistan have seen a "spiral downwards" of violence, the incoming US regional commander said Monday, adding the fight against Taliban forces would continue unabated through the winter.

General David Petraeus told reporters outside Downing Street after talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown that there had been "significant progress" in some areas of the country.

But he added: "There's no question but that the trends in terms of violence and so forth have been in the wrong direction.

"So in that case, you're either spiralling downward or upward and in certain areas in Afghanistan clearly there has been a spiral downward that all involved... want to arrest and then get going back up again".

Eisenhower's son says Presidential kids should NOT serve in war (0.00 / 0)
I was bummed to read this, and I apologize, I left the article at work, but it I'll try to post the link tomorrow.  But basically, Eisenhower's son is the last surviving child of a president to serve in a war during their father's term.  He said Prez and VP children should not serve because if the Prez and VP have to worry about their kids they can't do their job as well.  Well that just pisses me off, as if no one else who has ANY job that isn't VP or Prez isn't distracted while their kid is at war?  And you can't argue that the Prez and VP make more important decisions . . . what if a mechanic is so overwhelmed that his child is at war, doesn't adjust your brakes right and you get into an accident?  It is all relevant, no soldier, no parent is more important than any other.
